Who needs 'em? A bridal party that is. Many of my couples choose to go without a bridal party, or just have an honor attendant on each side. It's a decision that can bring a big sigh of relief for both you and your potential invitees, and for good reason; it's expensive for all of you.
As the couple, there are get-togethers and parties, gifts, flowers and possibly hair and makeup. For them, there is apparel, travel, time taken off, and parties to give.
There is no need to have anyone 'stand up' with you; two people who watch the ceremony can sign the license. Many couples choose parents, siblings, or close but geographically distant friends to sign. Some have had waiters or ceremony musicians.
If there are other special people you'd like to have participate, they can do readings, seat guests, wrestle away cell phones and cameras (only half kidding) or participate in rituals like handfastings or wine pourings. And truly, everyone at your wedding ceremony is part of your bridal party!
