Why is it a smart move to limit your bridal party? There are lots of great reasons, not the least of which is keeping track of them, the possibility of hurt feelings, and your urge not to be standing up there with your beloved...and two soccer teams. Assuming that everyone at your wedding is an honored guest, why is it more cost effective to bail on making some "more honored" than others?
Simple. And the biggest is money. Every person will need either a bouquet or a bout (and no, carrying a parasol or a lantern isn't going to cut it), a thank you gift, an invite to the rehearsal dinner with their significant other, and possibly makeup and hair, if you're dictating that they get it done professionally. If you've bought into the idea that you can't simply ASK these people, but need to PROPOSE to them with a box full of goodies, add that on to the financial pile.
From your bridal party's perspective, being a guest (even a guest who is tapped to do a reading) is a much sweeter deal; they don't have to buy THAT dress, shoes, multiple presents or become part of the never-ending stream of parties that come before a wedding. You're actually doing them a favor! What could be nicer than that?
If you can limit your bridal party to one person on each side, your stress level will go down exponentially. And your wedding budget will remain intact.
